State orchestrated and zanupf instigated human rights violations since the March 29 election in ZimbabwePLEASE NOTE THAT THIS RECORD IS BY NO MEANS COMPREHENSIVE. HOWEVER IT IS BEING CONSTANTLY UPDATED29 March 2008 Lydia Nyamuriga, was beaten up by Zanu PF supporters while celebrating the victory of MDC in the parliamentary elections in Epworth. Nyamuriga and two other friends were bashed with sticks and dragged on a tarred road were she sustained injuries on her right arm and head. 1 April 2008 Edmond Zimba was attacked by Zanu PF youths in Rugare while celebrating the victory of MDC in the parliamentary elections. Zimba was struck by an empty bottle on the face and sustained serious injuries. 2 April 2008 In Mabvuku Tafara people who were suspected to be MDC supporters were beaten up in beer halls by a group of Zanu PF supporters. Loosing candidate for ward 26 is alleged to have sent these youths to beat up anyone they suspected to have voted for MDC. The police are not reacting to the issue and are behaving as if nothing is happening. In Mudzi North Ronny Chanzenza of Karumba village had his house destroyed by two Zanu PF youths identified as Martin Machokora and Dudzai Chirapa. Chanzenza managed to escape unhurt. In Mudzi North Zororai Manyonga had his house burnt to ashes by people allegedly sent by Kachipa who was Zanu PF house of assembly candidate. 5 April 2008 In Mabvuku, Douglas Chinyemba was attacked by a group of ZANU PF youths and he sustained sereous facial injuries. 6 April 2008 Shepherd Zhanje, the MDC councillor for Ward 2 in Seke, Chitungwiza, was attacked by Zanu PF youths and had his right arm broken. He has since sustained a permanent injury. 8 April 2008 MDC supporters were rounded up by armed soldiers at Kotwa, Mudzi and severely beaten up. Paul Mhanza one of the MDC supporters sustained serious internal injuries and was admitted at Kotwa. Filter Chikura also had his eardrum damaged during the assault. Fadzai Shunyai of Marondera East was assaulted by a group of Zanu PF youths and uniformed forces at her home. They beat her up using sticks, wires and stones. She sustained broken arms. 9 April 2008 In Mazowe West, an MDC activist of Sable Peak farm that was invaded by the ZANU PF MP Chironga, was attacked by the later and his youths and sustained grievous bodily injuries. At the time of this report, he is battling with his life in Concession Hospital 9 April 2008 Unknown assailants driving a white Nissan Hard body vehicle abducted a candidate who represented the MDC in the Mutoko North council elections. He was taken to Mutoko growth point where he was assaulted by thugs aligned to Zanu PF. He sustained critical injuries and was left for dead. Onlookers who had witnessed the whole incident assisted him. An MDC supporter was brutally assaulted by Zanu PF supporters led by the MP elect Chironga. He is battling for his life at Concession General Hospital. Ten Zanu PF activists are alleged to have come at the MDC Marondera ward 7 councillor’s house and started singing politically provocative songs and erected a Zanu PF flag at his house. Matambudziko Midzi who is the Zanu PF’s youth chairperson for ward 7 led the mob. The group then proceeded to the Ward 5 councillor’s house was they threatened to inflict more harm on him after they had previously broken his leg in 2006. Ammonium Dzinoreva was struck on the head and back by a metal bar and sustained serious injuries. A report was made at Dombotombo police post but nothing was done. In fact, ZANU PF thugs came and threatened police officers. Zanu PF activists and a purported war veteran only identified as Huni of Homestead assaulted Roy Mari who was a polling agent at Damvuri during the elections. 10 April 2008 Denias Dombo was brutally assaulted by ZANU PF youths who are moving around in new white trucks in Kotwa. He sustained life-threatening injuries as he had all his limbs broken after the encounter with an angry ZANU PF mob. He also had his house burnt down to ashes. The situation in Kotwa has gone out of hand as an estimated 36 people have been displaced by the violence and intimidation so far. These people are staying at Kotwa Police station since their homes have either been burnt or their homes are now unsafe. 11 April 2008 A group of 15 ZANU Pf thugs moving in a white truck are reported to be on the rampage in Mutoko North constituency and have 3 MDC activists have been seriously injured after being attacked. The three – Cephas Nyamande, Batsirai Kapikinyu, of Nyamudo village and Rosemary Nyateka of Kapikunyu 1 village are in critical condition. Rosemary Nyateka was attacked at her home after a ZANU PF district meeting held at Kanyongo Township that singled her for having voted for Morgan Tsvangirai and for being an MDC supporter. She sustained wounds on her buttocks after being assaulted with logs. Batsirai Kapikunyu sustained a broken leg after being attacked with clenched fists, booted feet and logs. Cephas Nyaningwe sustained two broken legs. Patience Kwaramba was abducted at a polling farm in Hurungwe at 5pm by Zanu PF youths. They took her to Dawson Farm were they beat her up using with logs an her buttocks, feet and thighs. War veteran named Churu was leading these youths. She managed to escape and reported the matter at Tengwe police station. 12 April 2008 Zanu PF thugs assaulted Patience Mapuranga and Mahwisai Chizanga, an MDC polling agent accusing them of supporting and voting for the MDC. The two suffered serious injuries all over their bodies. The case was reported to the police and the police officer handling the issue was also assaulted and accused of supporting the MDC. More than 15 Zanu PF thugs in Mutoko South attacked Naira Savanhu and her children in the middle of the night. Savanhu was accused of having voted for MDC and giving victory to the MDC in the elections. Denford Ngadziore, was tortured, assaulted with weapon, feet and fists before he was arrested on his way to Glen View in a Kombi from town with a friend. They were carrying MDC fliers on the intended stay away for 15/04/08. There was a police officer in the kombi who ordered the driver to stop and that Ngadziore and his friend get off the Kombi and the police officer took them to central police station were they were detained for two days. He sustained a cracked lower molar tooth, laceration on the chin, one on the bucal mucoid lower lip and an abrasion on the upper lip. Shadreck James of Murahwa was attacked by Zanu PF youths on accusations that he was an MDC supporter. 13 April 2008 Alexander Kahwa, of Murehwa was asleep at home when a group of more than 10 Zanu PF youths came to his house and asked him to produce MDC books. When he resisted they started beating him with iron bars. They took him to their base and was released the following day. Takawira Hove, of Gokwe Sesame was shot on the thighs by an ex-CIO, Amos Jaravaza. Hove was pursued by Jaravaza from at Jaravaza Shopping Centre and was finally caught at a local gorge were Jaravaza fired three shots which injured him deeply. 17 April 2008 Men in army uniforms at around 12midnight beat Nixon Lole an MDC activist, in Epworth. They were using baton sticks stones and guns. They stole $2billion and other belongings, which included clothes and ID and passport. 18 April 2008 Soldiers came looking for Maud Manhanga’s brother and when she told them that she did not know their whereabouts they started assaulting her. They pulled her towards their car and asked her to lie down and beat her with batons and whips and in-between pouring water over her body. She sustained extensive haematomas of both thighs posterior, laterally and interiorly, haematoms of the fingers of both hands, tram track marks on the back and a small bruise at the centre of the back. Tichanzii Gandanga, the director for elections, Harare province was abducted by the Zanu PF militia on 18 April, 2008 and was severely assaulted for four days before he managed to escape and is currently seeking medical attention at a hospital in Harare. Gandanga sustained broken legs. Zanu PF militia in Makoni West following a brutal attack in the area left Knowledge Nyamhuka, the MDC provincial activist, for Manicaland province, for dead. He is currently recuperating in hospital in Mutare. Blessed Tapera Mudehwe of Mutare was stabbed with a sharp knife on the ribs by a Zanu PF youth for celebrating the victory of MDC in the parliamentary elections. 20 April 2008 Bright Mubayiwa claims that he was at home when he was shelling maize when 6 Zanu PF youths arrived and asked him where Tsvangirai was. He was taken to a place where the village holds its meetings. There were already a lot of people there. They then fetched his father who is a known MDC supporter from the field where he was. They came beating him the whole 2km. 2 other people were also beaten but quickly let off. He was then beaten under the feet with logs while one was stepping on his chest. His father was also being beaten the same. They were ordered to leave the area and go back where they came from in 1982.. They then left their village at night as they had been given a few hours to vacate the area. Carter Matengambiri and Cede Juche were leading the youths including Virimayi Muzanenhamo. Beatrice police arrested them and then were released without appearing at court 21 April 2008 Samson a three year old of Golden Star Farm, Shamva was beaten up by Zanu PF militia. His parents are ex farm workers who remained living on the farm after their white employer was evicted. They were beaten by militia who where saying “whites left you on this farm, you are MDC, you want whites to come back and look after you’. Their houses and everything they owned was burnt. The mother is in hospital with her son while her husband and two other children are in hiding in Shamva. Unarmed villagers in Makoni West, Manicaland on Monday managed to confiscate rifles from three soldiers and 10 war veterans who had descended in the area and were harassing and beating up innocent people. 30 April 2008 The Munyawiri family of ward 22 in Harungwe North was attacked by Zanu PF youths at night. The youths went to their homestead at around 7pm and forced everyone out of the rooms. When everyone was outside they then started to beat them up. Samuel Munyawiri tried to escape but only managed to walk a few metres before he fell and his attackers pounced on him while he lay helplessly on the ground. The youths also stole bags of maize from the family. The attackers were identified namely Elison Mawodza, Thulani Khumalo, Hardlife Kanyka, Mehluli Murasiranzwa, Handsome Mutinganzira and Watson Kanyoka. 4 May 2008 Moscow Chakabvapasi was attacked by a group of Zanu PF supporters who were about 100. His house and property were totally destroyed. He sustained serious injuries and was taken to Kadoma General Hospital. Henry Muradzikwa, the Zimbabwe Broadcasting Holdings (ZBH) chief executive is fired by the Zanu PF regime because he did not give Zanu PF and presidential candidate, Robert Mugabe enough coverage during the 29 March 2008 elections. He was replaced by Happison Muchecheterere, who has since re-jigged programming at ZBC, replacing popular dramas with turgid independence documentaries dusted from the archives to glorify Mugabe. 6 May 2008 Farmers in the Chegutu were called into the police station in Chegutu and were “re-educated” in a lecture on how to vote. They were told that if they or their workers voted for MDC in an election run-off they would not be allowed to farm anymore and would be evicted. War vets attacked the Rogers family and their farmhouse was looted. Robert Mugabe’s spokesperson, George Charamba, read a riot act to all state media editors and threatened to fire them if they ever wrote anything that puts President Morgan Tsvangirai and MDC in good light. 8 May 2008 MDC councillor for Chegutu, Mashonaland West, Mujikwa, had his homestead destroyed by Zanu PF supporters and youths wearing blue police overalls. He and his family received serious injuries and have since fled their home and are in hiding in Harare. 10 May 2008 Taphios, Tavengana, Alois and Nyasha of Mashame in Gokwe Nembudziaya were heavily assaulted by Zanu PF youths. Tavengana had one of his eyes almost plucked out from its socket. 13 May 2008 Elderly people and women in Zaka west are being beaten up by a team of Zanu OF supporters being led by Richard Baradze, Tovadini Makwanda and Bernard Madzivire. They are also going around the area collecting all MDC regalia and wearing it then go around beating people and burning their homes pretending to be MDC people. Christopher Goredema and his brother Hardlife Goredema were heavily assaulted by Zanu PF youths at their homestead in Gokwe Gumunyu for supporting the MDC. Lucia Phiri was beaten up and was forced to leave her home by Zanu PF militia in Gokwe. She sustained serious injuries and had to be transferred from Gokwe hospital to Kadoma. Soldiers appeared and interfered with an MDC victory celebration party in Buhera West, Manicaland. The group was led by a Major Svosve and stopped the celebrations. 14 May 2008 The whole Pfebve family who are well known MDC supporters in Mt Darwin were abducted from their home and taken to a Zanu PF torture camp. MDC House of Assembly candidate for Gokwe Centre, Linnet Ganyani, had her business premises petrol bombed by Zanu PF supporters Kudakwashe Chihombiro, Isaac Gana, David Masvisvi, Lovemore Matukuta and Mike Gwasha. 15 May 2008 Tonderai Ndira, the Harare province secretary for security, was abducted from his home in Mabvuku, Harare by a group of nine armed men he was later found dead in Goromonzi a few days later. 17 May 2008 Villagers in Dhanga ward in Mberengwa are sleeping in the mountains to avoid night terror raids, which are being led being led by Raphael Muzongomi and Luke Mabhudhu. 18 May 2008 School headmasters O Ncube and John Madhinda have been forced to flee their schools under Chief Chizungu in Mberengwa West. 19 May 2008 Five armed men with two AK rifles and driving in a white pick-up truck attacked MDC election agent for Makoni Central in Manicaland, Amos Kutiya and his wife Annamore Kutiya. They surrounded his house before firing shots and then assaulting the two. Kutiya made a report to Rusape Police Station. One of the assailants is a member of the police Support Unit. Teachers at Marecha School in Bikita West were assaulted severely beaten by soldiers from 4.2 Brigade. 20 May 2008 MDC supporters Max Takombwa sustained broken arms, Sikandaza Murambiwa and one identified as Nyasha internal injuries after being severely beaten by Corporal Mbangana and Staff Sergeant Gozho in Gutu East ward 16, Masvingo. The soldiers also detained them for three days denying them a chance to seek medical attention. Samuel Sibanda, a headmaster in Kariba rural was brutally beaten up by Zanu PF youths at their torture camp in Kariba and had to seek medical attention at St Anne’s Hospital in Harare. Councillor Portifa, of Marondera Town was kidnapped during the night and his whereabouts are still unknown. 21 May 2008 Four armed men driving in a blue twin cab registration number AAA9248 abducted Shepherd Jani, the MDC treasurer for Mashonaland East from his business premises at Murehwa growth. He was found dead two days later with serious injuries. In Mhangura about 21 MDC supporters were raided by police and taken away around 1am. Some of the names of the people taken are John Kabeki, Frank Dzomba, Antony Jacob, Collin Tembo, Clifford Mutoreka, and Sungai Vangai 22 May 2008 Motsi Michael Mugomo of Muzarabani had his home burnt by purported war veterans. He escaped to Mbare, Harare where the war vets followed him and took him away and his whereabouts are still unknown. 27 May 2008 Zanu PF councillor, Kenny Makuvaza, in Bikita West leading Zanu PF supporters abducted Chipengo who is an MDC supporter and his whereabouts are still unknown. 28 May 2008 The High Court today ordered soldiers deployed in rural areas after 29 March elections out of the countryside, where a violent retribution has intensified after Zanu PF’s Robert Mugabe was beaten by President Morgan Tsvangirai. Over 200 senior army officers have been deployed in and around the country to campaign for Mugabe. Business premises belonging to MDC members Chisheche in Gutu, Masvingo were forced to close while soldiers under the guidance of Colonel Chiwara are beating MDC activists. Heavily armed soldiers beat scores of MDC supporters during the night in Chatsworth. At least 300 Zanu PF youth militia are being trained in Hurungwe amid reports that the youths would be deployed as teachers and later be assigned as presiding officers in the 27 June presidential election. A Zimbabwe Prison Service (ZPS) officer identified as J.Z is being hunted by the dreaded CIO officers after he was discovered to be an MDC supporter. He has since fled into hiding in fear of his life. Relatives of MDC spokesperson and MP for Kuwadzana, Nelson Chamisa including his grandmother were severely assaulted by armed soldiers who accused them of being staunch MDC supporters. 30 May 2008 An 11-year-old girl was raped at her parent’s home in Bhasikiti village in Buhera South by a group of Zanu PF supporters. Her mother was assaulted with logs on the back and had to seek medical attention in Harare while all her father’s livestock looted. A group of soldiers led by one Colonel Mayoyo, severely attacked MDC activist, Sagiya at 4 am at Fuve – Panganayi in Zaka, Masvingo province. Four police officers from Shamva police station have been arrested on allegations of decampaigning Zanu PF. Three of them spent three days in police cells while one of them spent three days in hospital under police guard. 31 May 2008 Villagers in Chihota are being threatened with death if they do not attend Zanu PF rallies and night vigils in the area. Purported war veterans and Zanu PF militia are moving around Gweru ordering churches to place portraits of Zanu PF’s Robert Mugabe next to that of Jesus Christ in churches. A Mahindira vehicle being driven by Christopher Chigundu abducted MDC members Gijima Mpofu, 76, and Mazhindu at Village 1A in Tsungai area, Gokwe Nembudzia. They later managed to escape and have sought refuge in Harare. 1 June 2008 At Tiki village ward in Gokwe Nembudzia, Zanu PF supporters attacked several MDC supporters seriously injuring four MDC youths. Obey Geza led the attackers and they are driving six Mahindra vehicles. Other perpetrators are Christopher Chigundu, Gari Mukundwa, and Oscar Mandebvu and have also been raping innocent women and girls during their attacks. The four political victims have been admitted at Sanyati Hospital. Reports from Gokwe districts show that Zanu PF supporters backed by armed men are confisticating I.Ds of known MDC members so that they will not be able to vote on 27 June 2008. Advocate Eric Matinenga; the MP for Buhera West was arrested on allegations that he was fanning political violence in his constituency. He was later released from police custody on 5 June 2008 after a Mutare magistrate; Hlekani Mwayera dismissed the police charges after finding no grounds for prosecution. Adv Matinenga in May filed papers at the High Court compelling the court to order soldiers deployed in rural areas to unleash terror to move out. The High Court granted the order but the soldiers are still causing terror in most rural areas. “War veterans” are moving around the town of Chinhoyi, threatening people that they would be war in Zimbabwe if they vote for the MDC presidential candidate, Morgan Tsvangirai on 27 June 2008. Zanu PF supporters and “war veterans” who accused them of being MDC members assaulted close relatives of Piniel Denga in Chikomba. Denga is the MP for Mbare in Harare The whole family, however, vowed to continue supporting the party despite the victimization. Army Chief of Staff Major General Martin Chedondo called on soldiers to rally behind Zanu PF’s Robert Mugabe during the presidential run-off election. This is despite that under the Police Act, Defence Act and Prisons Act, police officers, soldiers and prison officers should be apolitical. Police watched helplessly as Zanu PF hooligans disrupted a consultative meeting called by the Matobo Agenda in Silozwi to discuss the presidential run-off. Hundreds of villagers had turned up for the meeting when Zanu PF thugs disrupted the event. 3 June 2008 Teachers at Muchokwa and Murembwa schools in Zaka West have been severely attacked by armed soldiers. Both schools have since been closed as the teachers have fled affecting the schooling of students. Army general Constantine Chiwenga is leading a team of rampaging soldiers in Gokwe. They are beating up people and forcing them to confess that they voted for the MDC. The country’s sole broadcaster, ZBC, fired eight senior journalists for “misconduct” in a crackdown on “unpatriotic” journalists. The dismissals are irrational and motivated by political considerations. President Morgan Tsvangirai including the vice president, Thokozani Khupe was detained at Lupane Police Station for 11 hours after he had been arrested at Tsholotsho turn off. President was on his way to address an MDC presidential rally at Tsholotsho. The rally had to be cancelled due to his arrest. Sixteen MDC activists were arrested by the police in Lupane, Matebeleland North as the police swept through the town looking for anyone who was associated with President Tsvangirai’s visit in the area. President Tsvangirai’s visit was barred from taking place. 5 June 2008 Villagers in Gokwe Chireya are being forced to pay $6 billion and a goat for voting for the MDC by Zanu PF supporters who are backed by armed men who claim to be war veterans. Ernest Mudavanhu, the Zaka North MP, Masvingo was arrested by the police in Masvingo and released without any charges later in the day. Police detained 12 British and United States diplomats and slashed their vehicle tyres in Mazowe; Mashonaland Central after the diplomats had visited victims of political violence in Bindura. Twenty-four MDC youths were granted free bail by a Bindura magistrate after they had been arrested for resisting from attending a Zanu PF night vigil a week before. 6 June 2008 The Zanu PF regime has suspended the operations of all non-governmental organisations (NGOs) operating in the country and ordered them to apply for new registration permits. The move will affect over four million Zimbabweans who are facing in need of food aid in the country. Zanu PF has plans to use the suspension of NGOs as a political weapon to lure voters ahead of the 27 June presidential run-off. Zanu PF terror bases have been established in all Harare’s high-density suburbs as the party unleashes its terror campaign in urban areas ahead of the 27 June run-off election. President Morgan Tsvangirai including vice president Thokozani Khupe and national chairman Lovemore Moyo were detained by the police at Umzingwane and later taken to Esigodini Police Station as they were about to go to a scheduled MDC rally in the area. In Glen Norah, Zanu PF supporters are moving door to door claiming that they want to check whether their names appear on the voter’s roll. 7 June 2008 MDC supporter in Mhondoro, Dadirai Chipiro was burnt to death by Zanu PF supporters while sleeping on the night of 6 June. Other MDC supporters also in Mhondoro, Pamela Dube, Kenneth Ruwamabara, Abigail Ruwambara and one identified as Valeli have been admitted in hospital after being attacked by Zanu PF supporters on 6 June. Dube was admitted at Harare Hospital after receiving severe burns while Abigail, Kenneth Ruwambara and Valeli are receiving treatment at Chitungwiza Hospital. Residents of Mbare suburb in Harare are having sleepless nights after a group of Zanu PF thugs known as Chipangano are moving door-to-door harassing and beating up people for being MDC members. Advocate Eric Matinenga, Buhera West MP, was re-arrested on charges of inciting public violence in his constituency. 8 June 2008 High Court judge Alfonso Chitakunye, ordered the immediate release from police custody of Buhera West MP, Advocate Eric Matinenga. Media Monitoring Project of Zimbabwe (MMPZ) employees have been arrested and are detained at Binga Police Station on yet to be established charges. 9 June 2008 Anthony Mutodza, the MDC candidate for Chikomba South had his Isuzu double cab stolen by Zanu PF supporters at his farm in Featherstone, Chikomba. Mutodza managed to escape from the thugs but they however assaulted workers at the farm. The Zanu PF thugs also looted all his wife’s clothes and a 50 litre drum of diesel before they left after going on a rampage at the farm for over five hours. The police continue to ignore a High Court ruling ordering them to release Advocate Eric Matinenga, the Buhera West MP from police custody. Zanu PF has deployed hundreds of youth militia to assault targeted prominent MDC activists including high-ranking officials such as MPs. Christian Alliance of Zimbabwe’s offices were raided this morning by armed police details. 10 people including Pius Wakatama were assaulted before being arrested. Police also confisticated laptops, T-shirts and the organisation’s documents. The 10 officials are still in police custody at the Harare Central police station. The MDC council candidate for ward 1 in Harare South, Brian Mamhowe has gone into hiding fearing for his life following the killing of his five-month pregnant wife, Pamela Pasvani and his six-year-old son, Nyasha Mashoko by Zanu PF supporters on Friday. Residents of Eyre Farm in Harare South constituency are living in fear of their lives from Zanu PF supporters following a spate of threats on their lives led by the Zanu PF MP for that area, Hubert Nyanhongo. 10 June 2008 The family of MDC Buhera South parliamentary candidate, Julius Magarangoma was attacked early this morning by a group of Zanu PF militia. The militia also destroyed the Magarangoma’s entire homestead. Gutu Senator Empire Makamure’s car was burnt to ashes after Zanu PF militia attacked his home. Twelve polling agents undergoing election training are arrested at the home of MDC chairman for Mashonaland West, Jephat Karemba in Chitomboriwzi. Karemba house is also severely damaged and his property is looted during the raid. 11 June 2008 300 Zanu PF youth militias are being trained in Hurungwe, Mashonaland West to cause mayhem in the area. In Chihota communal lands, Mashonaland East, villagers are being intimidated and forced to attend Zanu PF rallies. Zanu PF militia in Shamva, Mashonaland Central, have abducted four MDC members, Ward 17 chairman, Power Chitomera, Epison Nyamadzawo and were abducted Ncube and his son. 47 MDC supporters have been arrested and are detained at Bindura Police Station. They are being denied food, water, treatment and access to a lawyer. Some of the victims are fainting due to hunger. The police has also threatened MDC lawyer in the area. Chengerai Mangezvo Kahari was shot dead by armed Zanu PF militia at Chireka Shops in Bindura South. The Zanu PF thugs are also hunting for Chengerai’s brother who is an MDC councilor Residents of Chisipite in Harare are being forced to attend Zanu PF meetings at Lewisam Shopping Centre. Zanu PF has established torture bases in Chegutu Town, MDC supporters have been abducted, assaulted and burnt with hot water. Residents of Mbare in Harare are having sleepless nights as armed Zanu PF thugs are assaulting them everyday. Some of the residents have since fled their homes. Peter Ndlovu, MDC chairman for Mwenezi West was brutally beaten by Zanu PF thugs. He lost several teeth during the assault. Zanu PF is doing door-to-door campaigning in Mhangura and threatening people that if they don’t vote for the MDC they will war in the country. Armed Zanu PF militia shot MDC activist, Kuenda of Ward 13 in Mangunje constituency on the leg. He is in a critical condition at a hospital in Harare.
12 June 2008 The police detain President Morgan Tsvangirai again for the second time in one day in Gweru during his presidential campaign. He had been detained earlier on in Kwekwe. MDC secretary general, Tendai Biti is arrested at the Harare International Airport upon arrival from South Africa. He is being charged of trumped up treason charges. The Hurungwe rural homestead of Hon Blessing Chebundo, the MP for Kwekwe Central is razed to the ground by Zanu PF thugs. Relatives are attacked and injured and the MP’s young brother is missing. Zanu PF supporters stone the residence of Hon. Takalani Matibe of Chegutu West after President Morgan Tsvangirai had paid the MP a visit in the morning on his presidential campaign. The thugs also loot Hon. Matibe’s property during the attack. Houses of former Chegutu Town mayor, Dhlakama and MDC parliamentary candidate for Chegutu East, Gift Konjana are destroyed to the ground by Zanu PF supporters after President Morgan Tsvangirai had visited the town and had received a rousing welcome from the residents. Residents of Kadoma Town are beaten up by Zanu PF youths accusing them of waving a motorcade carrying President Morgan Tsvangirai that had passed through the town. Police in Zvishavane arrest Chitungwiza South MP, Misheck Shoko and 31 MDC activists as they were peacefully campaigning in the area. MDC’s Mwenezi district chairperson, Zanu PF youths and several men in army uniforms abduct Hardlife Hove. His whereabouts still remain a mystery. The team also burnt the house of MDC senior members Muzenda and Timitia. 13 June 2008 All civil servants in Shamva, Mashonaland Central have been forced to attend a Zanu PF political mobilization meeting by Zanu PF supporters on Sunday 15 May 2008. Zanu PF supporters have set up torture bases in Norton Town and are abducting MDC members for beatings. Police in Gweru impound two MDC presidential buses this morning in an attempt by Zanu PF to cripple the MDC campaign. 14 June 2008 MDC youths putting up President Morgan Tsvangirai’s posters in Highfield, Harare are arrested and taken to Machipisa Police. One of the youths identified as Rambanapasi is abducted. 15 June 2008 Zanu PF supporters at Kutsanga Research Station just outside Harare have beaten up scores of families injuring people mostly defenceless women and children. Over 5 000 posters of MDC presidential candidate, Morgan Tsvangirai were seized in Highfield and Glen Norah suburbs, Harare by a group of Zanu PF supporters who later burnt them in full view of police officers but no action was taken by the officers. 16 June 2008 Police have failed to bring MDC secretary general, Tendai Biti to court after he was arrested at the Harare International Airport upon arrival from South Africa. He is facing treason charges following a fake document that was purported to have been signed by him was leaked during the run-up to the 29 March elections, which Zanu PF and its president, Robert Mugabe lost to the MDC and its presidential candidate, Morgan Tsvangirai. Scores of residents in Kuwadzana East and West constituencies in Harare have been forced to flee their homes after continuous beating and intimidation by Zanu PF supporters in the area. Tenfara, the son of the MDC election agent for Ian Kay, the MP for Marondera Central, Mashonaland East province was abducted at night by Zanu PF youths in the area. His whereabouts remain unknown. The Chitauro and Muchapondwa families in Musana, Bindura, Mashonaland Central provinces are severely beaten by Zanu PF militia. Some have had to seek medical attention and five of the families’ members have been hospitalised, while most of them have since fled their homes in fear of their lives. Reports from most rural and farming areas show that villagers and other people in the community are being forced to attend rallies from as early as 5 am until the end of the day at 6 pm. They are not given a chance to feed or attend to their crops. The Zanu PF militia is also forcing the villagers to pay money and livestock in order to maintain the thugs lives during their stay at the bases. Young women are also being forced to sleep at the bases during the night and are being used as sex slaves. 17 June 2008 A number of residents in Epworth just outside Harare have fled to the bushes after Zanu PF militia being driven by vehicles of known senior Zanu PF officials assaulted them during the day. They are being accused of supporting and voting for the MDC. Members of the public are being forced to paste Zanu PF posters and attend meetings in Mufakose and Marimba Park, Harare by a group of Zanu PF youths. Those who refuse are being beaten up. Residents and business premises at Gokwe Centre in Midlands province are subjected to beatings by Zanu PF supporters. Some of them are forced to pay money in order to avoid torture from these marauding thugs. Venancia Goka and Meynard Mupondi are in a critical condition after they were abducted and later assaulted by a group of Zanu PF supporters at Zaka growth point. The situation in Mbare, Harare remains tense as residents continue to complain of daily beatings at the hands of Zanu PF supporters. In some cases, the police just watch as these beatings take place. 18 June 2008 Thousands of police officers and their families are being forced to cast their ballot papers through postal voting under the watchful eye of their superiors. At least 130 000 police officers and their families are expected to vote through the ballot box. The rural home of Dr Lovemore Madhuku, the chairman of the National Constitutional Assembly and other 22 houses in Chipinge were burnt by Zanu PF supporters. |
